Dolma or also known as sarma, stuffed grape leaves are one of the most popular appetizers in the Mediterranean! They are a bit time consuming so make sure you have an extra pair of hands to help or it could take hours of rolling! I bring in the kids to help, a lot of my friends get together with their moms and aunts and make a whole large pot full! I got stuck making them myself a couple times and it wasn’t fun! Some people are pros at it and can roll so fast….not me! Although it takes time to make them its so worth it!
They taste great and everyone will love them! You can make them with meat or with out, I make both. I don’t add too much meat to mine you can add more to it if you like.
My friend Saira makes the best fish biryani, a couple of weeks ago she brought over a plate, and it was delicious! Especially since she did not add cilantro! I am not a fan of cilantro, I feel sick from smelling it in the market believe it or not! If you like cilantro by all means use it, but if your like me…use parsley!:) I hope you enjoy this dish as much as we do!:)
We love our cabbage rolls especially when they’re pickled! Pickled cabbage are tangy and convenient! You don’t have to cut, core and boil, can’t get easier than that! Plus we love the taste of them!
Some stores have local pickled cabbage that is intact and just vacuumed sealed not jarred. I have a favourite brand that is jarred, that I just love!
This is a dish I grew up with, a friend of the family who is ethnic Albanian but grew up in Egypt would make this for us, its an Egyptian dish. I would get so excited when she would bring this! When I got older and learned how to cook I asked her for this recipe, and have been making it ever since!

I made these dolma’s vegetarian, if you want you can add ground meat to it, add to the rice mixture either raw or cooked, (it will cook while baking)
