Chocolate Ice Cream

Sunday, June 24th, 2012 | 0 comment

Ok so between chocolate and strawberry I will have to say chocolate is my 1st favourite ice cream! When I was a kid  my mom would take me to the mall and she would always get me ice cream from Laura Secord. I would pick out strawberry most times…it was amazing! Tried it most recently and well it sure does not taste the same as it used too! Hate when they change things!

If it was store bought it always was chocolate or Dutch chocolate….even those don’t taste the same anymore! I know its not me…its the product itself. I am not alone in thinking that they have changed in quality!

There was a time when all natural was available and it did taste good! Now a days ‘all natural’ includes mono and diglycerides among other things! I much rather have control of whats going into my ice cream and enjoy it with out the worries of whats really in it!  I am so happy I got my ice cream machine….how did I not get one sooner?!

Another thing I absolutely love is chocolate syrup, with my milk or on top of cereal, ice cream you name it I love it! I don’t however like the ingredients….but it didn’t stop me from buying it all these years! I just never thought of making it myself…until I typed it out and sure enough found it on the net! Will be sharing that with you as well:)

What you will need for ice cream:

  • 2 and 1/2 cups half and half cream
  • 1/2 cup 3.25% milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla*
  • 3/4 dark cocoa
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp instant coffee (optional)
  • 2-3 tbsp Nutella (makes it extra special)
Whisk together all the ingredients in a medium size bowl, until well blended. Taste and if desired add a few more spoons of sugar. Chill in fridge for 3-6 hours. Pour into frozen ice cream machine bowl, and let it run for 20 minutes until ice cream is formed. Freeze for 2 hours to set. Serve and enjoy!
*For the vanilla I use a vanilla syrup, it helps cut down the bitterness from the cocoa, if you don’t have any you can use whatever vanilla you have.
For the homemade chocolate syrup its super easy to make and tastes great! For recipe follow this link:
Made banana splits for everyone…this big one was for my son! <3 Super easy to put together! What’s your favourite ice cream flavour and how do you like it…plain or jazzing it up? I like it both ways, but I really love banana’s splits!
What you will need:
  • Ice cream
  • Banana’s
  • Whipping cream
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Fruits of choice, maraschino cherries, strawberries or raspberries
First peel and slice banana in half, scoop out ice cream, add whipped cream on top, drizzle with chocolate syrup and top with fruits! Enjoy!
