Oatmeal Raisin & Chocolate Chip Cookies

I love a good oatmeal cookie….one of my favourites is by Old Mills Oats, the recipe was on the bag when I was kid. Its hard to come by nowadays.

I made a few changes to the recipe, they ask for a cup of Crisco butter flavoured shortening, I much rather use real butter, with a bit of regular shortening for added tenderness (I love a soft cookie).

I add chocolate chips but if you would prefer you could just use raisins or any dry fruit you prefer…dates are a great alternative.

What you will need:

  • 3/4 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 1/4 shortening
  • 1 cup  packed brown sugar
  • 2  eggs
  • 2 tbsp  water
  • 3 cups Oatmeal
  • 1 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 tsp  baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp  salt
  • 1/2 cup Sultana raisins
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips (optional, you may just use 1 and 1/2 cups raisins)
Preheat oven to 375. Line baking sheets with parchment.
Cream sugar, butter and shortening till light and creamy. Add egg and water.
Sift the flour, salt and baking soda, add oatmeal and flour to the creamed butter, mix till blended.
Add the chocolate chips and raisins.
Bake for 8-12 mins, cool on cooling rack.
For chewy cookies take them out when just a bit under baked, for crispy cookies bake a bit longer.

For even cookies, scoop out with ice cream scoop or measuring spoon

Cool on cooling rack for 5-10 mins

  1. That looks and sounds soo good!

  2. I made oatmeal chocolate chunk cookies, kids loved those chewy cookies & gobbled like anything. Good way to sneak in fiber in a healthy way. I'll try with raisin next time.
