My kids love Oreo cookies! Me not a big fan I actually loved the fudge filled chocolate cookies from A&P when I was growing up! Oh my goodness I loved them so much so that if my grandpa would bring in a box they were gone in a 2 days! I would finish them up so fast! Over the years those cookies have gone through a few changes…the names..packaging even the taste and quality! Don’t you just hate when they ruin a good thing?
As far as Oreo is concerned it pretty much tastes the same as I remember…which is a good thing!
I have become an ingredient freak as of lately and it hasn’t been easy on my kids! I keep telling them that its for the better…but its a hard adjustment…it was hard for me too…but I am feeling better about the food choices I am making…but once in while heck you gotta break the rules right?
After reading the ingredients from the package (Canadian differs from the States) I decided that it wasn’t too bad and so I got my kids their Oreo cookies! My sons favourite cake is Oreo cake…funny I never made it before or bought it…I guess hes had it at his friends parties!
This is what my boy wanted for his birthday! He actually liked it too! Although he is not a big fan of homemade items which I totally do not understand! I wonder sometimes where does this kid come from! How can one prefer store bought over homemade? Well maybe when he grows up he will come to appreciate all his momma did for him!
He was specific about wanting it like a ‘real’ Oreo cake…so my search was on to find or come up with a dark chocolate cake recipe! My chocolate cake isn’t dark enough for this Oreo cake…wish they made cake mixes without all the junk, that would have been great! This is the recipe I followed: dark-chocolate from sweetapolita it turned out great!
This is a list of items you will need:
- Oreo cookies
- Oreo cookie crumbs
- Whipping cream or Nutri-Whip
- Icing sugar
- 3 layers of dark chocolate cake
- buttercream frosting*
I baked the cake in three 8 inch pans, make sure to grease them well and line them with parchment. You can use the aluminum pans if you don’t have baking pans. Make sure to completely cool your cakes before you ice it as the whipped cream will melt! What I did was refrigerate the cake for 1 hour before icing it.
As for the icing part, I used real whipping cream and added a couple spoons of icing sugar after it whipped for added sweetness. For the layers, I folded in some Oreo crumbs not the cookies the actual crumbs and combined them, filled the layers with it. Iced the outer part with the plain whipped cream and garnished with the crumbs and cookies! Pretty simple and tasted really good!
*I combined oreo crumbs with buttercream for the decoration on top. You can also use buttercream combined with whip cream for the filling if you want a sweeter cake.
